Tips On How To Effectively Lead Generation Y Employees

Generation Y, people currently aged 21-30, are unique among employees in today's workplace

. Leadership training experts agree that you need to treat this generation differently - they are the least satisfied employees of all generations in the labor force.

First, they don't take directions well. They don't immediately defer to a boss or manager. Generation Y workers are coming to your workplace right out of college and entering the entry level positions. There are ways to make sure that managing them is a positive experience for all concerned.

Try to keep them happy: In a happy workplace, Generation Y workers do better. And if they are happy they are actually very dedicated and hardworking employees.

Give Admiration and Congratulations: Generation Y, more than anything else, needs positive acknowledgement. They were raised by families that praised them constantly and they were adored.

Because of this, these workers require a lot of attention, praise, and positive reinforcement. This can be tiring and even annoying. Thankfully, it isn't expensive. When they do well, acknowledge this and praise them, publicly if appropriate. It's free, easy, and effective in encouraging better performance.

Don't be Overbearing: You won't get anywhere if you are heavy handed with your Generation Y workers. This age group is not motivated by controlling, blaming, censure, or threat. They respond to positive, not negative, reinforcement.

Allow Them Independence: This doesn't mean you let them do whatever they want whenever they want. But still you need to be aware that Generation Y came of age in the computer era. They are used to working independently, communicating remotely, and being able to be heard. Don't get all controlling and micromanaging.

Remember, they questioned their parents and now they will question you. It angers them when they feel like they cannot speak their minds. If you give them some independence they will reward you with improved performance.
