The event that the champagne you are purchasing is being used for whether it is a formal gathering or an informal dinner and the guests' preferences are also factors in the decision of which champagne to utilize for the function. The number of guests is also a factor since you will have a budget to adhere to in most cases. It is easier to take the taste that guests have when you know them well, if you are not familiar with the guests then you will need to use other methods to make the selection. There are some other tips that you can utilize when attempting to select a premium champagne for an event no matter how small or large.

Knowledge of the various brands and their tastes will make the selection easier. There are some tips that will make selecting champagne easier such as considering the price, taste and label of each brand. The type of grapes utilized in the brand will also be a factor as they have an effect not only on the taste but the body and sweetness of the champagne. The meal that is being served can also play a part in the decision of which champagne to serve on any given occasion.

Next, look at the varieties of grapes from which the wine is produced. The side of the bottle will list the varieties, and if it is an assortment of grapes, this is a non-vintage (NV) champagne. For purchasing a premium champagne, you want a vintage grape champagne. This term means that all the grapes came from one variety and one lot, not an assortment or amalgamation of grapes. For the champagne to be considered a vintage champagne, 80% of the grapes must come from one lot and one variety, with the 20% coming from reserve wines of previous vintages. Then the wine must be aged at least three years before selling. Non-vintage wines are blends of grapes and 80% of the champagnes sold.

The next characteristic of the premium champagne is the sweetness or dryness factor. The levels for champagne are brut (very dry), extra brut (dry but a little sweet), sec, demi-sec, and doux. Sec is sweeter than brut, demi-sec and doux are both considered dessert wines. Ranking is the last factor in choosing a premium champagne. Grand Cru is the highest ranking a champagne house can receive. The next ranking is Premier Cru, or second-ranking. Both of these rankings will be on the bottle of champagne.

In addition to the certification, there are many varieties of Champagne. One type is Rose. Rose is created by adding a tiny amount of wine from the still or cuvee wine, but some vintners make it with the color from red grape skin. Another variety is Grand Cru which literally means "great growth" and is the best honors a French vinter can get. Premier Cru or the first growth is one step below Grand Cru. Then Grande Marque is a ubiquitous term the French utilizes which means "great brand" which often means these are some of the best varietals from the vineyard.
