For a previously-owned vehicle that is not more than fifteen years old or a bus manufactured on or after the 1st of January 1971, there should be a certification from the manufacturer that the vehicle had been manufactured during the current calendar year. You should also prove that the vehicle is for your own personal use, and you are the one who bought it new. By new it means that it has never been used by anyone else other than youdemonstration and pre-used vehicles from rental agencies are not considered new.
You can also easily import Japanese cars to Canada if they have been received as gifts from a friend or relative from Japan, even if the car arrives at port after its manufacturing year. Simply present a document that contains the signature of the giver and yourself and attesting to the nature of the vehicle as a gift, and that there has been no money involved.
If your privately-owned vehicle had been damaged beyond repair while travelling, you may import a replacement vehicle into Canada, provided you are able to submit a copy of the police report and a statement from your insurance company that lays out the extent of the damage. You may also bring in a vehicle if you are a returning resident after a years absence or more. The customs restriction will also be lifted if it is your first time to settle in Canada and you have owned and used the vehicle before your arrival.
These exceptions are beneficial for those who would like to import Japanese cars into Canada. Take note, however, that the exceptions for the restrictions set by the Canada Border Services Agency only.
