Mages are arguably one of the best PvP classes in the game for various reasons. Some will tell you its because of the ability to lay down some nasty AoE when it's needed. Others will rant about the insane amount of control they possess. The one thing that is certain is that a well played mage will always be a threat.

The first thing you must master as a PvP mage is your ability to control a fight. You need to have a good idea what you intend to accomplish before you step into a fight. One on one you can hold your own against nearly any class, but a misstep is all it takes for most opponents to take you down.

The primary area where mages have control is the various abilities they have to increase the distance. Many classes have roots or snares that they use to keep their opponents slowed or stuck in place. Mages can simply blink out of these situations allowing them to be where they want to be, at range. Blink is going to be one of your most used abilities thanks to this fact, allowing you to save your trinket for when it is really needed.

Depending on your spec you may have other tools to help you get away. Spells like Frost Nova, Cone of Cold, and Dragon's Breath can allow you to stun or root your opponent and get some distance. When possible you should try to save blink after your opponent uses a moderate or major cooldown to close the gap. You want to make sure that you don't end right back in trouble after escaping.

The primary PvP spec for a mage is Frost simply due to the added control. With frost you will decrease your Frost Nova cooldown, gain a shield that freezes those around you when broken, gives you a pet with another freeze, and allows you to reset your frost spell cooldowns. The combination of abilities make this both a highly survivability spec as well as being able to dish out the damage when needed.

The primary form of damage is with the ability Deep Freeze. This encases a frozen target in a block of ice for a few seconds. This allows your spells to do more damage and increases the critical chance. Combined with Fingers of Frost this allows you to do a massive amount of damage in a short amount of time.

The combination of control and the potential of high spike damage makes a mage a dangerous target. Being able to use spells like polymorph to reset the fight, or using Evocate to heal simply give us another edge. You will become a nasty threat when you master the tools a mage has to offer.
