Tips To Increase Safety In Your Restaurant

Opening your own restaurant, whether it is a franchise or a family-owned business

, can be scary. There is always the risk of failure, of course, but once that fear is overcome, it is the many responsibilities that you have as the owner that is truly frightening. Whether it is food poisoning or workers' compensation giving you nightmares, here are a few tips to put your mind at ease and increase safety in your restaurant.

It is very important that your employees each have a food handler's permit, even those washing the dishes and bussing tables. Because they will be around the food, in general, they must have a food handler's permit. A food handler's permit is not difficult to acquire and will educate your employees about food safety.

Acquire a liquor license if you intend to sell alcoholic beverages at your restaurant. Take careful stock of all alcoholic beverages on the premises, and be mindful of your employees' behavior. An inebriated employee is a danger to himself or herself, your employees, and your customers.

Hang signs in the restrooms that will remind workers to wash their hands before returning to work. These signs give very detailed hand-washing instructions and will help your restaurant avoid any food contamination issues, which could potentially lead to food poisoning. It is also beneficial to remind, either verbally or through the use of signs, those handling food to wash their hands after handling raw meat, and to wash their work area and any objects in their work area that might have come into contact with raw meat.

Make sure your floors are clean and dry. It is easy to overlook small spills from washing dishes and sloshing drinks, but a wet floor is a safety hazard for both your employees and your customers. Pay careful attention to the dish-washing area, as this will be the place most likely to have wet floors. Remind your employees to wipe up spills, no matter how small, and to be aware of where they are stepping at all times. Put up cautionary signs in areas where the floor is or was recently wet.

Make sure all the entrance and exit doors shut securely and have working locks. Watch for signs of rodent infestation, such as droppings on the floor and teeth marks or holes in the food. If you do find a rodent on the premises, take immediate action to capture, not just poison, all rodents, and to prevent any future infestations.
