Tips To Remember When Shopping For A Lawn Mower

Every spring people begin pulling their lawn mowers out of the back of the garage

, some with eager anticipation of the smells of summer and new cut grass and a cold drink, and others with the dread of a hated chore. Either way, a lawn mower is a common sight and sound of summer.

There are a few different kinds and sizes of lawn mowers, as well as different kinds and sizes of lawns. The different aspects of a given lawn must be taken into consideration when deciding what mower is best for that yard. Is it flat, or does it have steep inclines? Are there wide open expanses, or is the yard scattered with trees and paths? How large is it? Another thing to bear in mind is the cutting path of the mower blades. How wide a swath do the blades cut, and what width is needed to efficiently complete the job? Anyone with a little experience pushing a lawn mower can understand the subtleties that make the job more complicated. These issues are the things to give thought to in order to find the best mower for the project.

In times past, there was one basic kind of mower, the reel mower. It ran on human muscle, and remains a rather ingenious design today. It still cuts with a scissor -like motion of its five to eight blades. Although those made today are lighter in weight and easier to use, of necessity, they are smaller and more suitable for smaller lawns, around 8,000 square feet or less. Now, however, there is far more to choose from for keeping lawns under control. Besides the reel mowers available today, there are four other basic sizes. The next size up is the walk-behind push mower, then the riding mowers, lawn tractors and the largest, the garden tractor.

Walk-behind power mowers contain engines starting at 5.5 horse power, and their cutting paths range from 18 to 22 inches. Yards of up to half an acre do well with this size of mower. This is why this style is a common summer sight in neighborhoods in the city and suburbs. For hilly yards, a self-propelled mower can be a good alternative, or if the owner simply wants a little help pushing the mower through the lawn. This size comes gas, electric or battery powered.

Riding mowers are a big step up in size and power. Their horse power goes from 11.5 to 13, and they have a significantly larger cutting path of 28 to 36 inches. With this amount of power and wide swath, they are well-suited to yards that are more than half an acre. It has the added benefit of being entertaining to operate. The kids who previously disappeared at lawn mowing time will begin volunteering for the job.

Lawn tractors are another big step up in size and power. With 18 to 24 horse power engines, and a cutting path as big as 46 inches, they are big enough to take attachments such as carts, spreaders and other yard implements. At this size, it accommodates one to three acre yards. With its size and added multipurpose benefits, it understandably costs more.

Garden tractors are very seldom seen outside of a professional lawn care setting. They have the largest engines, and their cutting paths are wider than any other model. They are often used by professional landscapers for their versatility. Tools such as professional plows, tillers and even snow blowers in winter can be mounted on these workhorse machines.

With all of these options, it could become difficult to choose the right mower, but if the buyer takes into account their lawn's size and layout, and their budget, they should be able to find the right lawn mower for them.
