Tips about Preventing Tooth Erosion

Although it can cause various damages to teeth, tooth erosion is a dental problem that can be prevented. Sensitivity, tooth dislocation or more severe problems can be avoided by eliminating the tooth erosion issues.

Dentists recommend rinsing the mouth with water after drinking acidic beverages or eating acidic foods. Teeth can be brushed after at least one hour from consuming acidic foods or drinking soda. This waiting period allows teeth to re-mineralize after being exposed to acids. However, carbonated drinks not only affect the teeth but the stomach too and consuming them in excess leads to more complicated health issues. Their consumption is not included in healthy, recommended diets.

Using a straw while drinking soda or other sweet drinks that contain more or less acid, enables the beverage to go straight to the back of the mouth rather than "rinsing" the teeth. Acid drinks especially must be swollen quickly because they are very corrosive and favor tooth erosion. Recommended drinks are plain water, unsweetened tea or coffee and milk. Soda and non-acidulated fruit juices must be avoided. Even natural fruit juice can harm the teeth and lead to tooth erosion.

Chewing gum can help. It reduces the "dry mouth" sensation by stimulating the salivary glands to produce more saliva. This is good for the teeth because they can re-mineralize easier. When chewing gum is not a must and the toothbrush is at hand, using a soft toothbrush and toothpaste with fluoride help minimizing tooth sensitivity. Brushing is very important and the most indicated time for brushing is between two and three minutes. Each group of teeth must be given the same, thorough cleansing treatment to remove plaque and food reminiscences.

Of course, visits to the dentist must be on the priority list every six to six months for general check-ups, and each time certain dental discomfort occurs. As a patient, it is important to discuss with the dentist about the condition of your teeth and about the possible risks that may occur. The dentist has the right to inform his/her patients correctly and provide treatment and guidance for a good dental health line of his/her patients.

Specific dental products that prevent dental erosion are now available on the market, but over-the-counter solutions are not always the best. The dentist's advice is, in this situation, the only one worth taking into consideration. Tooth erosion can have multiple causes, so the dentist can prescribe the right product to prevent or treat tooth erosion.
