Tips for Packing When moving home

Tips for Packing When moving home

If you are moving home and making the move yourself with the use of van hire or van rental it can be a fun but also stressful time. So here are some useful tips to help keep frustrations and stresses at their lowest.

Before you start!

The most important issue is getting a quote from a reputable national van hire or van Rental Company. This should be done some weeks before the day of the actual move and confirmed a week before.

Before you start moving everything into the back of the van you hired, write an inventory of what you will be moving to your new address. This way you can count everything in and everything out. When you do this, people often start considering whether they need to take some items at all. These thoughts should really have happened at the de-cluttering stage but selling or giving away any items will free space.

This is also the time to decide which boxes are the heaviest. They will need to go in first as they should not be squashing items below them. They also serve as a good anchor in the back of the hire van for large furniture.

Packing tips

To ensure that your valuable possessions remain in at least one piece during transportation, you are going to need certain materials to help prevent items crashing against themselves. Wrapping paper or newspaper can be used to cover individual pieces of crockery and kitchenware. Be aware that print from newspapers could smudge some articles. It is therefore advised to only use it as a cushioning agent or on items that are already wrapped.

Bubble wrap is also a useful agent for support and cushioning especially for supporting the weight of heavy electrical objects. A strong packing tape is advised rather than domestic selotape as it is likely boxes could rip or become misshapen. Old towels, tea towels and sheets are also handy for supporting fragile commodities or protecting your furniture from scratching.

Zip lock bags are easy to mark and so are really handy for keeping a track of which drawers or boxes your small odds and ends came from.

Keeping everything steady

To prevent the furniture sliding about in the back of the van stack large heavy boxes in around the base. It is always a good idea to stack the heavier boxes at the bottom of the van loadthen they will not squash what is immediately below them. Also string, or strong packing tape should be used to prevent draws sliding out of furniture and creating damage.

Again the boxes need to be taped together so they do not go flying as soon as the van hits the first corner. As well as taping all boxes closed, tape all boxes together.

When you have finished packing and you find the van is not totally full you need to prevent the load from sliding all over the van floor. Try tying rope or straps across the van to prevent the load from sliding backwards or toppling over as soon as you accelerate or go up a hill. A reputable van hire or van rental organisation will recommend a van which is equipped with points within to tie rope or straps to.
