Tips for Riding Your Bike This Winter

When it comes to riding a motorcycle, many people opt out of doing so in the winter. It would be hard to blame them for this choice; after all, the chilling cold and icy roads are not exactly safe, for automobiles or motorcycles alike. Although there are hazards for every season of the year, winter can be the most dangerous. However, that does not mean that the motorcycle should be hidden away for months at a time. As long as proper precautions are taken, fun can still be had on the roads.

1. Be careful when you are operating your motorcycle. Driving faster than the local law allows, or otherwise behaving recklessly, will only bring problems. Winter is not the same as summer or spring, and you should not treat it as such. Check the weather forecasts daily in order to be aware of any hazards on the route you wish to take.

2. Make sure there is a significant distance between yourself and any cars. Should you come across puddles of water or slippery ice, this will ensure that you have enough room to stop. If you choose to creep up on people due to impatience, one mistake can lead to deadly accidents; if not that scenario, there may at least be expensive repair bills involved. Keep in mind that other people will be working around the weather, too. They deserve respect and courtesy just as much as you do. The standard recommended safety distance should be about two cars in length.

3. Invest in winter friendly clothing that will keep you feeling warm and comfortable. While cars offer protection from the cold wind and are usually equipped with a heater, motorcycles are not. You are, in essence, at the complete mercy of the snow and low degree weather. Therefore, it is important that you cover up as much of your body as you can. Articles of clothing should overlap, and wearing layers is a good way to fend off the cold. Some people try to avoid any vulnerability by closing their sleeves and pants with duct tape; this is not necessary, as there are materials on the market made to handle such conditions.

4. Just as you would be expected to do with a car, regular maintenance of the motorcycle is required. Nobody wants to get stuck with a broken down motorcycle during a snowy drive at night, and this could easily happen without proper care. The tires should be inspected to make sure that they are not too low on air and have enough pressure to handle rides. The lights should be cleaned to make sure visibility is not compromised. As far as mechanics go, the motorcycle should be thoroughly checked by a professional to locate any hidden, internal problems.
