Tips for Staying Stress Free Through Significant Life Changes

Tips for Staying Stress Free Through Significant Life Changes

It could be a serious illness, a death in the family or any of a number of things. Knowing what to do can help you overcome this stress and come out a better, healthier person.

1) Attend Church: If you are a practicing member of any faith, attendance to your house of worship is one of the best things you can do. It's easy to pull in on yourself and not go anywhere. Going to church can help you in many ways. Being among friends, having support and getting your spiritual batteries recharged are especially necessary in difficult times.

2) Counseling: To most people, this term has a negative connotation, but in this instant it does not. A counselor can help you avoid many of the traps that creep up on us at these moments. He or she is also someone you can safely talk to. Chances are pretty good that your family is with you in coping, and you know there are things you can't say to them. That doesn't mean you don't need to say them, just who you say it to. Believe me, this is an enormous help.

3) Keep Busy: Use your mind, use your hands, but keep busy. It's when you are just sitting there that difficult thoughts encroach. As an example, if I don't keep busy, our missing daughter comes to mind and I can imagine all kinds of things that might have happened. That does not help anyone, including me.

4) Medication: It's there for a reason, and you may need it. Not everyone does, nor do they need it in every situation. However, if you are having panic attacks or can't keep your emotions in check, it may be time to talk to your doctor.

5) Routines: As much as you can, follow your regular routine. Routines give us a stable base and allows us to let life go on even if our hearts are breaking. The recommendation is that you don't make any major changes in your life for at least six months after a significant loss.

6) Tears: God gave us tears for a reason. It's sort of like the valve on a pressure cooker. When you cry, you're letting steam out through that valve. It allows you to cope with things better. I don't care if they tell you "real men don't cry," a real man would not be ashamed of tears during difficult times. If you need to cry, cry.

7) Visualization: Have you ever been to a place so peaceful you want to stay forever? Have you ever read a Bible passage, poem or song that seemed to help you feel at peace? Using them can be a great benefit. Mine, as I've written many times, is the 23rd Psalm.

Take it phrase by phrase and put yourself in that place. Feel the soft, green grass under your feet. Listen to the quiet gurgling of the stream. Smell the good food loaded with all of your favorite foods. Most important, see the Shepherd there to guard you. Any passage that you like can be used in that way.

8) Watch What you Read: Not only that, but what you see on TV or at the movies. This has been a hard one for me, because I love to read. However, I'll get to a certain point in a book and it hits just a little to close to home. You don't need the added stress.

You can get through these significant changes. It may seem like the situation is hopeless at times, but it's not. When you feel yourself slipping into any of the negative thought patterns, remember this article. It can be done.
