Tips for the First Time Snorkeler

Snorkeling is such an amazing experience for both the first time snorkeler and for someone who goes all the time. There's a whole underwater world to discover through that snorkel mask. But first, some tips for the first timer. The first thing is getting comfortable with your mask. Put your mask on and adjust the straps so that it fits snugly, but without being uncomfortable. Once you have it set, pull your mask off and go to the waters edge to do a little fog prevention. Sometimes, when you're snorkeling, your mask may fog up. To help prevent this, simply use a commercial spray inside of the goggle mask, or even more simply spit into the mask and rub it around. Then rinse your mask in the water. Now you're ready to put your mask back on and go snorkeling.

The snorkel is the tube that you use to breathe. It goes to the left of the snorkel mask. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and lightly bite down on the rubber piece. Be sure to keep your mouth closed to avoid having water enter. Some people get anxious about breathing through the snorkel, but after a few minutes they do get used to it and are able to breath normally. Remember to keep your breaths long and steady. It will relax you and you will have more energy to keep snorkeling for a longer period of time. If water enters the tube, simply blow it out with a strong gust of air, like a whale.

The fun part is putting on the snorkeling fins. If on the beach, walking in fins can be pretty comedic. It may be easier to slip them on in the water. See which you prefer. The best way to swim with fins is to use long steady strokes, trying to keep your legs as straight as possible to better avoid slapping the surface of the water, which could scare all the fish away. There is also something called the dolphin kick. This is just what you envision it to be, both legs sweep and down together, like a dolphin. This technique may be a little difficult to master at first, but it does work quite well for speed.

Start snorkeling in shallow waters first, and then when you feel comfortable breathing steady and swimming steady go ahead and adventure into the deeper waters. There are so many different types of undersea creatures for you to explore. Snorkeling is a pleasurable and relaxing way to discover this amazing underwater ecosystem we have here in Maui.
