Containers are an efficient way to go and are suitable for tomatoes, lettuce, radishes, carrots, green peppers, chili peppers, strawberries and much more. Gardening containers come in a wide range of materials, sizes, shapes, colors and price and can be placed around the yard, on window sills, porches, decks, balconies and roof tops. Another plus afforded by containers is the ability for each gardener to express their individual style and taste.

Containers can be grouped together to encourage pollination or scattered in different areas and are easily moved from inside to outside or one location to the next. Containers made from materials like sturdy plastic, porcelain, terracotta, wood, stone, concrete, glass, metal and fiberglass can be reused over and over again from one gardening season to the next. The newer designs of planters come with the ability to self-water and others are made to be hung with brackets, act as window or deck rail planters, and hang from a beam or on the wall. The ways to mix and match containers as well as distribute them over a small area are endless.

Besides the many varieties of containers available, many green houses and home and garden centers sell dwarf plants meant to thrive in small spaces. Though the plants themselves are smaller, taste and high yields are unaffected. Tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and peas are only a few of the dwarf variety plants available. Fruit trees like lemon, orange, lime, apple, banana, pomegranate and fig trees can be bought as dwarf varieties and fit comfortably on the porch or patio.

As a gardener with limited space, do not hesitate to grow many plant varieties in the same container. Try growing radishes around the base of your tomato plant or mix different lettuces and other salad greens in the same container.
