Tips in Setting Up a Network Printer

When we say network printer, it means a stand-alone printer connected to a computer network

. When a network printer has been successfully set up, it will always be available to all users in the network. Because of this advantage, more and more inkjet and laser ones are designed with this functionality and are most commonly set up in an office environment.

A network printer can be connected wired or wirelessly. Wired connection is done by connecting it directly into your hub or router using an Ethernet cable. Wireless connection uses Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to connect to the network. Steps in setting up the printer for networking vary every brand/model so it is important to follow the instructions found in your the manual carefully.

After having it successfully set up, you may now share the printer with any computer in the network by following these steps: For Windows 7 users, Click on the Start button, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, then a wizard will appear. Select Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth Printer option, choose your printer from the list and then click Next. At times, it will prompt you to install the printer driver on the computer so just click on Install Driver. Just follow the next few steps provided by the wizard then click Finish.

For Windows Vista users, just click on the Start button, Control Panel, Printer, Add a Printer, then browse for your network printer. Just follow the Add Printer Wizard then click on Finish.

Additional Tips: After setting up your home network printer, you have to test the device to confirm if it is working. Print a test document by printing any word document saved in the computer or you can click on the Start button, Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, click Printer properties, and then select Print Test Page.

If the test document fails, read through the manual again for any missed step(s) and for troubleshooting steps. You can also check your printer manufacturer's website for further details. And if everything else fails, do not hesitate to call the technical support people and they will be more than happy to make your network printer work.
