Tips to prevent Fire Hazards in your Workplace
Fire Safety Companies: There are thousands of different hazards in the workplace. Most of them can be averted if the proper precautions have been taken. The best way to get rid of hazard in the workplace is to train all of your employees in workplace safety. Hazards exist in all workplaces, starting from offices to construction sites. Any place there are people and any type of equipment the potential for hazardous occurrences is also there. Fire Prevention in the work place is important for many reasons. Having a fire prevention plan will help prevent fires from occurring, will inform employees of what to do in case a fire occurs, and in case a fire does occur it will allow company personnel to escape the building or property unharmed.
Fire Prevention:
It is important that employees be trained in locating possible fire hazards and where to report such hazards. Reporting of things such as overloaded electrical sockets and improperly contained ignitable materials must be maintained as the responsibility of every employee. Further, adherence to following safety measures within the workplace is essential to averting fires. It is imperative that if you see any possible fire hazard you immediately notify a manager. Always follow up and make sure issues are dealt with promptly and adequately. Never assume something is safe as your life may very well rest on that assumption.
Escape Routes:
All employees should aware of their fire escape plan. There needs to be at least two ways to get out of a building, in case one of them has been blocked by fire. If you are the employer, make sure that all employees know what their escape options are. There must ALWAYS be a clear path to each exit. Obstacles in the way can cause people to trip and fall, adding more possibility of injuries. Make sure all escape routes are clearly marked so those who are trying to escape the building have no problem finding where they need to go during a stressful situation.
When it comes to such escape options, it is indispensable to make sure the doors are unlocked when there are employees or visitors in the building. You don't want employees to go to what they think is a way to get out of a building safely and be stuck inside because the door has been chained or locked. Never wedge fire doors open as they are designed to protect escape routes and prevent the spread of toxic smoke and fumes. And as fire needs oxygen to survive, a fresh feed of air through wedged open fire doors may only lead to building the fire hazard.
Fire Fighting:
Fire extinguishers should always be in your workplace. If a fire is caught soon enough, a fire extinguisher may be enough to put it out and save belongings and lives. Make sure you have an ample number of fire extinguishers available through the building, fire extinguishers are designed for use in your particular industry (eg. if chemical-related fire then use specific extinguisher, etc.). Fire extinguishers should be inspected regularly to keep them in good working condition. Employees should be warned not to attempt to deal with a fire unless they have been trained to do so. If you have been given permission to deal with a fire, consider these steps,
Follow your training procedures never putting yourself at risk.
Always ensure there is an escape route between you and the fire.
If your clothes catch fire, drop to the floor and roll around. This will help to extinguish the flames. Your training should have covered this and you most probably know it as the stop, drop and roll'.
You cannot predict when a tragedy can strike. The very least you can do to is to prepare and equip yourself with these fire fighting tips so that you wont end up panicked and confused when this crisis happens to you. Employers need to have fire extinguishers in the proper areas and be sure that all employees know where they are located and how to correctly use them. Prepare yourself when you still have the time to do it. Do not put it off.
