To be a Leader in Sales we MUST begin to THINK like a Leader


Almost everyone who plays a major role in any organization, especially the members of the management team such as the supervisors, managers and CEO's wants to be recognized as a leader and respected as a leader by what he/she does relative to their effective leadership qualities.

The qualities I speak of has a lot to do with what is done and how it is done to move a team, build team spirit, keep abreast of changes in customer attitude and have and relate to and an appreciation of our fast changing and very dynamic environment, all added together like ingredients in one pot to result in profit and productivity.

The same is applied to the salesman or saleswoman who envisions himself/herself as a leader in sales is one who must first see himself'/herself as a business person and manager of his/her enterprise.


Have you ever noticed that traditionally, salespersons think of themselves as just that -"salespersons?" Many salespersons operate as though he/she has a product to push because of quotas and targets to meet and sometimes peddles and pushes a product to a prospect or client who later has buyer's remorse.

A leader in sales recognizes that he/she needs to change his/her attitude and thought process to begin thinking like a leader and master of his/her business.

So the big question is, what do salespersons need to have in order to be recognized as leaders?

Here are some answers:

He/she MUST understand the relationship between EFFORT and Reward:

There is a relationship that exists between effort and reward. The relationship is simply connection between the two. The more you effort you put into what you do the more profit you'll get out of it.

Where I come from, the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago , many persons use a phrase somewhat similar to: The harderI work; the harder I play! Those who are aware of the culture know that Trinidadians and Tobagonians are a "Happy People" who love to socialize (or as we say "lime") with friends and family all the time! Given any chance to do so (day or night) they will "lime" and therefore the philosophy is: To work hard and have money all the time means to have money to spend and socialize or "lime" anytime!

In the end, the effort will bring the reward, no matter what the goals or targets are.

He/she MUSTBELIEVE:

Salespersons need to believe in themselves, their company and product. The most important is the belief in oneself. If you believe you will be a success then you are going to become a success. You got to have a Positive Mental Attitude and Belief Mindset.

To do this you need to create a vision in your mind and see yourself as a success. If you can see it; you will believe it and therefore achieve it. (Whatever "it" might be!)

He/she MUST be "HUNGRY!"

When someone is hungry it means that there is the greatest desire to have something to eat to rid the hunger. This analogy can be made to express the desire a person should have for success.

Success is not limited to any given number of individuals, it is there for who so choose to have it, in the same way we can choose to eat to satisfy a need or not to and remain famished.

This hunger drives success! This hungerwill want us to be the BEST in the business, allow us to be the successful leaders we want to be (without limit) and an exemplar to many.

The hunger for success and the associated rewards is what makes a leader, A LEADER!

He/she MUST have Determination:

Determination is one of the main characteristics of a successful individual. The best salespersons or sales leaders never stop until they have achieved their desired goal.

The best part is, it is not the end for him or her because as a goal is achieved, a new one is set and they revisit the success cycle and see it, believe in it and set out to achieve it!


That's what being determined is all about! It's the positive mental attitude and mindset to achieving without failure the set goal or target.

To be a Leader in Sales we MUST begin to THINK like a leader and anything can be achieved. Believe and change your thinking, mindset and attitudeto that of a Leader and success will come effortlessly!

Once you have the right attitude and belief system you can choose to be the leader you want to be and definitely you are on your way to greater things each time and doing so Successfully.

Remember: Success is not limited to any given number of individuals; it is there for whom so choose to have it!
