Tony Abbott Announced A Cut To The unsustainable Australian Immigration Levels

Australias population is predicted to increase for about 36 million by the year 2050

. Due to this fact, Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott announced a cut to the countrys immigration intake to 170,000 places, compared to a peak of 300,000 two years ago with the belief that Australias immigration level is unsustainable.

The confusing part in this announcement is that the opposition leader still wants Australians to have more babies but wants to see less migrants coming into the country. I would like to see our birth rate improve because even now, despite the uptick in the birth rate over the last few years, its still significantly below replacement level, Mr Abbott told reporters as he discuss the coalition policy.

Mr. Abbott also stated that no cutting will happen to employer- nominated migrant places. However, the leader would not grant the same thing for student numbers. What I dont want us to be doing is selling immigration outcomes in the guise of selling education, he uttered.

A coalition government planned to cut the current population growth rate from more than 2% to the historical long-run average of 1.4%. According to Mr. Tony Burke, a sustainable population minister, data shows that Australias net overseas migration was on track to drop to between 230,000 and 250,000 people by the end of the 2009-10 financial year; while student visa numbers had declined from 320,000 in 2008-09 to about 270,000 in 2009-2010.

As mentioned above, if the current migration pattern continues, Australia will have 36 million people by 2050, which leads to the slashing of immigrants intake. But Prime Minister Julia Gillard disagreed to this prediction, she believes that the countrys growing population is still sustainable.

Opposing to the Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Abbott challenged Ms Gillard to nominate an alternative figure if Labor did not agree with the coalitions migrant intake target.
