Tools in a Machine Shop

A machine shop is one of the most widely used and recognized shops in the industrial field. The reason being is a good machinist can repair, and many times, fabricate a part or even a piece of equipment for a factory.

There are several different tools and pieces of equipment that are used in a machine shop. The first tool that is a must is a good wielding machine. Types of wielding machines can range from stick wielders to gas powered wielders. Now, wielders can be used for wielding several different types of metals together, from steel, stainless steel, aluminum and, in very rare occasions, brass and bronze.

Another great tool is the drill press. A drill press can be used for several applications. Many times, an annular cutter is used while drilling into the side of a pipe for a fitting such as corporation, or the annular cutter can also be used for drilling into the side of a pipe where a piece of all threaded rod is to be mounted. After the hole has been drilled, a tap, from a tap and die set, is brought into the picture; another great set of tools that can be found in a machine shop. The tap and die is then used to create threads so that the all threaded rod can be mounted into the side of the pipe. There is another great tool that will be found; a lathe. A lathe takes a very good machinist in order to use and operate it properly. The lathe, many times, is used for fabricating shafts or rods for pieces of industrial equipment that cannot be found or is no longer produced, or if it's cheaper for the machinist to fabricate than ordering a new part from the factory. Another tool found is a band saw. This used for cutting metal the proper lengths, or it can also be used for cutting the metal into a shape for a particular use.

Other tools consist of part cleaners, to grinders, and hand tools consisting of wrenches, screwdrivers, and socket sets. These tools are used for taking screws, bolts, and nuts apart from equipment that needs fabrication or repair. The parts cleaner is used for cleaning off excessive oils and grease. Parts that are going to be wielded must be cleaned thoroughly. Also an air compressor will be found in a good machine shop. Air tools, such as wire wheels for cleaning along with a blower, are used for cleaning.

Last but not least, is the safety equipment. Hard hats are for protecting the head of the machinist along with gloves. Gloves can consist of electrical gloves to general gloves and wielding gloves, along with safety gloves for the part washer. Safety glasses and face shields will also be found in every OSHA certified machine shop. Safety equipment is a must by OSHA regulations in any machine shop. It is suggested that all tools and safety equipment be properly cleaned, stored and used properly in order to have a safe and effective benefit from the equipment.
