, losing a tooth is never something you want to go through. When this does occur, however, it is important that you realize that your dentist has the full capability to restore your smile. In fact, modern dentistry has advanced to the point where there are several effective options that can replace a lost tooth.

Dental Implant And Crown

The longest lasting option you have to replace a lost tooth is through the use of a dental implant. An implant is a replacement tooth root that is attached directly to your jawbone. Once an implant is secured in your mouth, it will act as an anchor for a replacement dental crown that will replace your tooth. Once your dentist has anesthetized the area and secured the implant to your jawbone, you will need to wait between six and twelve weeks for your gums to heal around the implant. After this, your dentist will take an impression of the area in order to create a crown that will fit in perfectly to your bite. Once the crown is created, your dentist will attach it to your implant to complete the procedure. When an implant and crown are put in, they can last as long as 25 years or in some cases an entire lifetime.

Dental Bridge

Another popular option to replace a lost tooth is through the use of a dental bridge. A bridge is an artificial replacement tooth that is held in place on either side by dental crowns. To put a bridge in, your dentist will begin by reducing the size of the two teeth that will receive crowns. An impression is then taken in order to create a bridge that will fit in perfectly to your teeth. Once your permanent bridge arrives after a few weeks from the dental lab, your dentist will do a final check to make sure that the fit and coloring are correct. If they are, he or she will then use a special cement to attach the bridge. Once put in, a bridge will generally last about 15 years on average.

Dentures

If you have lost several or all of your teeth, your dentist may recommend a set of dentures for you. If all or almost all of your teeth are missing, your dentist will probably provide you with a complete set of removable dentures. If you have only lost several teeth, you will receive a set of partial dentures. Partial dentures use a combination of your natural teeth and several artificial teeth to fully restore your smile. Once you start wearing your dentures, they will provide you with a very natural tooth appearance. No one will be able to tell that your teeth are anything but completely natural.
