Tooth Restoration Made Easy With Cerec Technology
Trips to the dentist to get a crown put in no longer have to be the dreaded events they once were
. If your dentist uses CEREC technology to perform tooth restorations, you can be in and out of the office with a brand new crown in a single appointment. Instead of having to come in for multiple visits to get impressions made and then installed, the CEREC system can digitally scan your mouth and manufacture a crown in less than 20 minutes. When choosing a dentist, make sure to find out if they use the CEREC technology in their practice.
How CEREC Works
If your dentist discovers that you need a crown or filling put in, the first step will be to administer an anesthetic and prepare your tooth by removing any weakened or decayed tooth tissue. Next, he or she will take an optical impression of your tooth. Instead of having you bite down on impression "goop", your dentist will coat your tooth with a tasteless powder and a camera is used to take a digital picture. The optical impression process only takes one or two minutes. The optical impression will create a digital 3-D image that your dentist will use to design your crown or filling. Once complete, your dentist will send the information to a milling machine in the office. Depending on the size of the restoration, the milling machine will construct the part in about ten to twenty minutes. After this, your dentist will install the crown or filling to your tooth and you will be able to walk out of the office with a perfectly restored smile.
Benefits of CEREC
The most obvious benefit to the CEREC technology is the convenience of the procedure. Before CEREC was introduced, patients who needed to get crowns put in would have to come in for an initial procedure and get impressions taken. After this, the doctor would send the plaster impressions to a facility where they would be constructed and sent back within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, the patient would have to wear a temporary crown not specifically designed for their mouth, which would often fall out. CEREC eliminates this problem by taking impressions the same day as installing the new crown.
In addition, CEREC is constructed out of a ceramic material that is very similar to real teeth. Instead of metallic fillings that used to be commonplace, CEREC material both looks and behaves like normal tooth material. There is no danger of cracking because they will expand and contract at the same rate as your normal teeth due to temperature. Once CEREC fillings or crowns have been installed, they generally will not need to be replaced.
