Top 3 Traits Of People Who Get Things Done And Get Great Results While Doing Them

People like lists, just ask David Letterman

People like lists, just ask David Letterman. Here is a list, not finite, not exact but some good habits to adopt if you want to get more done and achieve better results in the process.

Have Adopted A System

This seems like an obvious thing to do but about only 17% of business people/business owners have a clearly defined way of doing business, definable by a system that they operate by. I have talked about the value of rote uniformity, the value of not reinventing the wheel, this all goes hand in hand with having a system to help you organize and set up your agenda for the day. Without a system, you are left to navigate each day and to always have to rethink how you are going to organize your day, each and every day. That alone takes up valuable time, energy and resources that should be spent on moving your agenda forward, not on repetitive housekeeping duties.

Systems are there to save you time, energy and make you money. If you do not one, you are losing all three.

Use That System

Another seemingly obvious thing, but the percentage drops in half from those that actually have a system to those that actually use it. Remember, we are talking about successful people here. Out of an average 100 people on the street, how many do you think could be classified as successful? There is a saying, if it was easy, we all would be rich.

Using your system is not classified as using it as an option, but your system becoming the autopilot of your operations. If you were not there to make decisions, your system would be able to make then for you in your absence. A slight overstatement but I'm sure the intent is there. The true value of a good system is that it allows you to do as many functions as possible with as little though as possible, thereby freeing you up to make the important decisions on topics that can not be pigeon-holed into a system.

You do not want to be bogged down with spending time on making decision after decision about issues that can be decided once and then inserted into your system to be called upon in the future to be executed according to the previous decision. That's the power of maximizing your productivity, re-using over and over again previously invested time. If you can capture that and insert it into your day-to-day operations, you are on your way to becoming a winner.

Invest Time In Order To Reap Rewards Later

This is absolutely huge. This one aspect of what makes successful people successful could easily be a book; all on it's on. It is so intertwined and ingrained in their day in and day out activities that it could be the number one trait. I hesitate to rank traits and say this is more important than this one but this one is a biggie, no doubt about it.

Let me bring this into focus. We all are busy, too busy to get what we want done on a daily basis. What we do not get done on Monday, we push over to Tuesday, which means before we even start on Tuesday morning, and we know we are already behind. Half way through Tuesday, we are now looking at Thursday and Friday as landing days for Tuesday's leftovers. We have more things to do then we have days left to do them. It is in this environment that successful people leave the rest of us in the dust. They have the will, the discipline, the foresight to carve out time amidst this chaos to spend on activities that they know will not benefit them that day, not that week, maybe not that month, but will benefit them down the road. This is extremely difficult to do, trust me. I struggle with this ideology every day. I personally can attest to the power of being able to invest in the future when the present is so pressing. I'm currently working on a project that demands that I spend time on activities that require a long incubation period, some days I can set aside the time, other days I weaken and give in to the immediate demands of the day. I know that I will suffer, in the long run, for those days that I weaken and give in.
