Zhejiang Province is situated along the shore of the East Sea
. It has a total area of over 100,000 square kilometers (38,600 square miles) and a population of 46 million. Zhejiang is home to many minority ethnic groups including Han, Hui, Manchu and Miao. Zhejiang is the province with the most islands in China, with more than 200 islands along its coast.
1. Hangzhou
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province and its political, economic and cultural center. With its famous natural beauty and cultural heritages, Hangzhou is one of China's most important tourist venues. The City, the southern terminus of the Grand Canal, is located on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, a superior position in the Yangtze Delta and only 180 kilometers from Shanghai. Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon type climate with four quite distinct seasons. However, it is neither too hot in summer nor too cold in winter making it a year round destination.
2. Ningbo
Lying in the east of Zhejiang, Ningbo sits at the mid-point of the Chinese coastline, towards the south of the Yangtze Delta. It covers an area of 9365 square kilometers (3616 square miles), of which 1033 square kilometers (399 square miles) constitutes the city's bustling urban centre. Ningbo is one China's oldest cities, and has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous dynasties. It also represents the birthplace of Hemudu Culture, which itself has a history of over 7000 years. These early civilizations lived and thrived in the area, and have contributed greatly to make Ningbo what it is today; an economically-developed, modern city with a profound cultural foundation.
3. Wenzhou
Wenzhou lies in the southeastern coast of Zhejiang Province and is its economic and cultural center. For centuries, the inhabitants of Wenzhou have relied on shipping, trading and fishing for their livelihoods. Its location on the sea has also been crucial to international trades. Wenzhou shoes and electrical appliances are popular both at home and abroad. Wenzhou citizens are progressive and open to western ideas. Millions of merchants have emigrated and started businesses throughout the world. The city is therefore a famous hometown of overseas Chinese.
4. Yiwu
Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Yiwu City is located in the central Zhejiang Province, covering an area of 1,105 square kilometers (about 426 square miles). In the year 222 BC, the Emperor Ying Zheng of the
Qin Dynasty (221BC-206 BC) set up a county here. At present, there is a county-level government of Zhejiang Province, governing 8 towns and 5 subdistricts. Compared with the other big cites of China, Yiwu is small, but it has the largest commodity market in China. This, along with Yiwu's mild climate has made it a tourism highlight in recent years.
5. Shaoxing
Lying to the south of the Yangtze Delta and in the north of the centrally located Zhejiang Province, Shaoxing, like a pearl with simple but elegant light, stands in the line between Hangzhou and Ningbo. Covering an area of 8256 square kilometers (3187.7 square miles), Shaoxing has a population of 4,340,000. The city proper is 339 square kilometers (131 square miles) with a population of 640,000. Two counties, three county-level cities and a district compose the whole of Shaoxing prefecture.
