A CV is your window to a job or any professional engagement with another organization

. It should communicate all those aspects about you which will make you emerge winner in the short listing stakes. Usually, a CV is read and a decision made within the first 8 seconds. Hence, it becomes important to be lucid, engaging and reflect your capabilities in a appropriate manner while composing your CV. For any job, there are normally a large number of applicants or else searches are made on job sites by prospective employers, who scan large database of CVs based on key words. Now, your objective becomes, framing your CV in a manner, so that your candidature for an interview becomes assured. There are some major aspects which one must keep in mind to make your CV which reflects you best.

Begin the CV with your contacts, eg mailing address, contact numbers, mail IDs, etc. Photos are not appropriate on a CV.

A scroll of your academic credentials, research publications, achievements, awards, professional associations, etc would be suitable. This should not be lengthy, but provide a sense of your academic qualifications and suitability to the job at hand.

Then layout a summary of your capabilities. Ensure that those aspects are highlighted which are aligned to the job you have applied for. This would strengthen your case for short listing and be a good match at the interview stage also.

Compose the CV in simple language. The prose should be lucid, readable and give a glimpse of your character. There should never be any grammatical mistakes, typos or embellished writing. Remember the truth shows.

List out your work experiences in chronological order in reverse, ie latest to be first. Do not delve too much into those jobs which are 10 to 12 years old, it does not help the interviewer in judging you, since they would not be relevant now. Always use positive and words which reinforces your abilities and achievements, eg, led, managed, was responsible for, etc. Highlight your achievements with figures where possible. This would make a stronger impact while reading.

The CV should be not more than three pages long, preferably shorter. The font size should be 12 and a script which is apt to the job at hand. Always tell the truth, since lies will eventually be found out. In case of any gaps in the CV or layoffs, state so, it reinforces character.

Highlight your achievements appropriate to the job and not harp on irrelevant history. Provide basic details of yourself. Salary details and any references should not be mentioned on the CV. These can be shared later.

Make your Sample CV attractive and breathe life into it. Emphasize on how you are best suited to the job at hand, but be accurate and truthful. Your CV is your face to the world, so work on it and obtain comments and reviews from your friends and close professional colleagues to polish it and make it stand out.
