Top Five Cars With The Highest Mpg Rating

Drivers are continuing to come under pressure from increased prices

, with more costly fuel and annual tax and also duty raises on the cost of running a car. It is not surprising then that when deciding to buy a new car, a popular consumers question these days is "how much to the gallon?"

Lately all the major car producers have pondering the green car question and the majority of models have seen fuel economy increase, CO2 levels drop and plenty of gadgets and gizmos added to increase engine efficiency. So what are the best performers when it comes to mpg.

Fueleconomy.gov tested a wide range of cars to discover the best mpg, with allowances being made for diesel cars and premium and mid grade fuel users. The figures were calculated using the assumption of 45% motorway driving and 55% urban travel.

The top four were all hybrid/electric cars, but lets concentrate on the petrol/diesels that most people drive, as their is still an unresolved debate about whether electric power is cheaper and are hybrids really green cars as most of the electricity is generated by fossil fuelled power stations.

The best of the gas sipping cars was the Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel managing 30 city miles and 42 miles on the motorway. This was followed by another Volkswagen green car special, the Golf TDI diesel covering the same amount of mileage. The Audi A3 diesel performed the next best covering a total of 30 city miles and 42 on the open road.

Toyota who produced the top-performing hybrid, with the Prius, took the next gas slot with the Yaris, a good reliable car that does 29 urban travelling and 36 highway miles. The top placed car is the Honda Fit, which managed to clock up 28 city miles and 35 miles on the motorway.
