MMA is a comparitive newcomer to the world of competitive sports

. The upshot of this is that the sport isn't mature enough for all the match ups to be really competitive.

Certainly, the early days of MMA - and Ultimate Fighting Championship in particular - had many way mismatched contests. In fact - if you saw Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos take apart Janet Finney at Strikeforce San Jose, you wouldn't think that things had never changed.

But, MMA does spring surprises. Shock results do happen. So for your entertainment, here are my five most shocking results in Mixed Martial Arts.

5: Chuck Liddell v Ben Franklin At UFC 115

Everyone expected that Chuck Liddell would have no trouble beating Rich Franklin, despite the fact that Liddell's abilities were beginning to fail. That's why, when Liddell broke Franklin's arm with a kick, those who had backed the favorite were smiling. They weren't smiling a minute later, however, when Franklin knocked Liddell out with a punch.

4: Georges St-Pierre against Matt Serra, UFC 69

At welterweight, Georges St-Pierre is certainly one of the top fighters ever. And the man they call GSP was surely expected to hammer 11-1 longshot Matt Serra. He didn't. Serra knocked him out. St-Pierre initially responded by blaming everyone and every thing but himself for his loss, but it was too late.

3: Brown vs Faber, WEC 36

Urijah Faber was the dominating force at featherweight in the UFC for over two years before he fought Mike Brown. Brown, who was an unfancied underdog, delivering a huge right hook to Faber's jaw and that was that. The end for Faber.

2: Frankie Edgar vs BJ Penn at UFC 112

If you are claimingto have seen this one coming, you are either more psychic than Sylvia Brown or you're not telling the truth. BJ Penn had never been taken down and hadn't lost a mixed martial arts fight in around 8 years. Then he met Frankie Edgar, who beat him over five rounds to become the new UFC lightweight champion.

1: Fedor vs Werdum at Strikeforce San Jose

It is almost scripture that Fedor Emelianenko is the best mixed martial artist on the planet. Apart from a single fight in which he had to retire hurt, Fedor had never, ever lost. Until that is, he fought Fabricio Werdum in June 2010. While Emelianenko dominated the early stages, Werdum's arm bar and triangle choke hold combination meant that the best MMA in the world finally tapped out.
