They are: The time management myth. How to deal with feeling overwhelmed The #1 thing that eats away at your time. Environment. How to place a dollar value on your time. This article will cover number two, how to deal with feeling overwhelmed. "How you view overwhelm is how you will handle overwhelm The alternative to being overwhelmed is to be under whelmed. Would you prefer to be under whelmed?" Andrew J. Cass. Overwhelm always precedes growth. It is a state in which your brain is developing new pathways and connections. It is absolutely essential to positive growth. You can't avoid being overwhelmed, but you can manage it. Instead of complaining about being overwhelmed and giving in to feelings of self-doubt and insecurity embrace it. Realize that it is an unpleasant feeling that comes with the territory of personal growth and get used to it. You know that you have so much to learn, and do, and you dont know what to focus on so your mind bounces back and forth from one thing to another, until hours have gone by and you have made little or no progress. The solution ties into the first article in the series about managing yourself in time. Schedule time to manage all of this information separately. Work on one thing at a time. Know in advance what you will be working on. If you are having trouble knowing where to start, look to your mentors for guidance. The essence of the idea is to know what you need to focus on right now. When what's in front of you is difficult or tricky and you are feeling overwhelmed by it remind yourself of your goals and why you are doing this. Stay the course. Allow the feelings of overwhelm, but do not give in to them. Stay focused. Before long you will notice that what once overwhelmed you is now child's play. Schedule time once a week to disconnect from the daily grind to have some mellow creative time. For some people going for a drive and just allowing your thoughts to flow and unfold will get your creative juices flowing. For others it may be laying out on the beach, or going to a Starbucks and hanging out. Whatever it is for you get out into the world and just let your mind roam. You will find that during this time is when your best ideas will come to you. Take notes and use these ideas to infuse your work with the extra creativity your disconnect time allows for. The final point is about tying off loose ends. Loose ends will pull at you subconsciously, disrupting your focus, and increasing feelings of overwhelm. Schedule a time every week to take care of anything that has been left hanging and get it out of the way. This will free up your mind space and allow for a sharper focus. Remember overwhelm is good! It means that you are out of your comfort zone and in the growth zone.
