Top Tips For Safe Winter Driving

Driving experts claim that many accidents and breakdowns could be avoided if drivers

took a few more precautions before setting off in their car during winter weather.

As the British weather can at times be unpredictable, it is recommended to prepare for the winter season. Here are our top 4 safe winter driving tips:

1. Prepare to travel

When going to work in the morning, make sure you get up earlier than you normally would so that you have plenty of time to clear all snow and ice from your car and listen to your local radio station for weather updates too.

Be prepared to take longer over your journey and don't forget to save your breakdown company's emergency number on your mobile phone should you get stuck in snow.

As snow and ice can cause substantial delays, make sure your fuel tank is topped up and consider delaying or cancelling your journey if conditions are really poor.

Finally, you might also want to consider getting your car checked before the beginning of the winter season so that any potential issues will be spotted early and the risk of a breakdown will be significantly reduced.

2. Tyres

It is important to check the condition of your tyres before the snow starts to fall and to carry a jack and a wheel brace should you require replacing a wheel.

Many driving experts also suggest changing your tyres as winter approaches in order to have better grip in cold wet weather.

If you live in an isolated area and you're looking to improve traction control further in your car, you should consider investing in a set of snow chains as they will make driving your vehicle on snowy and ice covered roads safer.

We recommend you practice fitting your snow chains at home and if you're going abroad don't forget that in most areas on the Alps it is a legal requirement to carry a set of snow chains.

3. Visibility

Checking that all bulbs are working and your windscreen wipers are in good condition is essential in order to improve visibility during severe winter weather.

Always keep an ice scraper and at least a can of concentrated de-icer in your car and ensure your windscreen washed fluid is topped up and treated with non-freezing additive.

4. Winter weather kit

As well as making sure your mobile phone is always fully charged should you need it to call for help, it is recommended to carry a winter weather survival kit in case you get stuck in snow.

A warm blanket, Wellington boots, a torch with spare batteries and non perishable energy foods are the essentials we recommend you keep in your car during this season.
