The one biggest top tip for brewing beer is to sanitize everything. I'm not joking when I say the best way to prevent disgusting tasting beer, flat beer and many other problems is dirty equipment. What sanitizing does is kill all the bacteria that will react with the yeast in the beer.
Doing this ensures that your home brew will have the best start and greatest chance of successfully turn out good. You do not have to sanitize everything in one go, only the equipment you will be using at the time, if it is the start of the process then you will not need to do your bottles yet.
To properly sanitizing your equipment is quite simple.
Find a large container (preferably new). Big enough to fit all your equipment.
Thoroughly clean it with your sanitizing powder (mixed with water to the manufacturer's specification)
Now fill it again with the sanitizing solution, and fully submerge all the pieces of equipment.
Have a break, have a coffee or a beer from your last brew.
About 30 minutes later you can remove the pieces of equipment and thoroughly rinse them making sure that none of your skin touches the insides of any equipment that the beer will touch. This will limit the amount of bacteria spread through the equipment.
Now that you're equipment is sanitised you are ready to brew your beer. And this time hopefully it will taste a lot better. This top tip for brewing beer is one I would full advise, I have lost many of kegs for not doing this properly
