While he was in prison, Tasso wrote continuously to principles, clergy, gentlemen and intellectuals asking them to release him and defending his own person. In 1580, during his imprisonment, was published in Venice, without his consent, the first edition of the poem he started at the age of fifteen, under the name Goffredo, consisting of 14 songs. The opera was a great success. The poet then decided to publish in Ferrara in 1581 the Jerusalem Delivered (la Gerusalemme Liberata). In March of 1588 Tasso, started again his frenetic travels between the courts and the Italian cities, he returned to Naples to settle in his favor lawsuits against the parents for the recovery of the dowry of his father. Although he could rely on relatives and connections in high places of Naples, the Carafa di Nocera Inferiore, the Gesualdo, the Caracciolo di Avellino, the Manso family, he preferred to accept the hospitality of a monastery. On this occasion he wrote the poem, left unfinished, "Monte Oliveto", referring to the convent in which stood the monastery that today houses the police station.

This Neapolitan period was problematic for Torquato Tasso, because of his poor health and financial hardship, to which were added new literary and religious controversy on 2Jerusalem Delivered" poem. Transferred to Bisaccia, Tasso could spend a period of greater peace of mind. From the contacts with the Count og Bisaccia born the inspiration for dialogue "The Messenger", in which is described a spirit of love that appears to the Tasso himself under the figure of a young man with blue eyes, similar to those which Homer attributes to the goddess of Athens. Tasso died in Rome in 1595, when he 51 years old, shortly before receiving his poetic degree promised him by the pope, Clement VIII. He was buried in the Church of Sant 'Onofrio on the Gianicolo, in the convent where he had been guest in search of spiritual solace in the last period of his life.
