Touch Screens Everywhere
If we were to make a list of the new terms that are getting more and more widespread
in our everyday speeches, the term touch screen would certainly be part of the top 10. Especially due to the boom of smartphones and tablets, the touch screen technology has entered our lives and has pushed its way through our habits. Ask a 8 year old child whether he knows what a typewriter is and maybe he will not be able to give you an answer, but ask him whether he knows what a touch screen is and most probably he will look at you as if you had asked him what is Santas job.
If older generations were born and have grown up with instruments that were characterized by buttons to push (from typewriters to pc, to the first mobile phones), the so-called digital natives, who were born with the latest technologies, find it natural to make a phone call, or write, or scroll a screen with just one touch. Nowadays the touch screen technology can be found in many objects that we use every day: mobile phones are probably the most evident example, and although in this sector there are still some people that miss the old buttons to push, we cannot deny that keyboards are giving way to the most modern touch screen platforms.
In addition to the new mobiles, touch screens also characterize tablets, iPad first of all. When the first iPad appeared, presented by Steve Jobs, one of its peculiarities that people immediately noticed was that there were no keyboard, and this is one of the features that make it different from laptops and that is considered as one of the essential peculiarities of this object.
But touch screens are not to be found only in mobile phones or tablets, but also in many other contexts: just think about e-books, which give you the chance to virtually - turn over the pages of a book just with a light touch, or about many household appliances that use this technology. From washing machines to ovens, the most innovative appliances can be set through touch screens, which make even the most traditional room of the house, kitchen, similar to a sort of futuristic island.
And what about the use of touch screens in tourism? We are already used to buy train tickets from the machines that use this technology, but touch screens are more and more used also in museums and in general on sites of cultural interest to give visitors the chance to learn something more about in a faster and more dynamic way. In the city centre of Florence, just to make an example, some touch screen terminals will be positioned in some strategic points of the city to provide tourists with useful information about the places to visit, useful telephone numbers, weather reports, transportation, scheduled events and so on.
To sum up, from job to entertainment, to domestic life, touch screen is becoming a more and more important part of our everyday life.
