Toyota Customs Roll Into Sema
We've seen the F Sport cars from Lexus going to SEMA and we've also seen Scion's troop of customs
. Now we have Toyota's plans: The company will take five cars to the show--a Yaris, two Tacomas, a Tundra pickup and the Camry Daytona 500 Pace Car.
The three-door Yaris was converted to a B-Spec Club Racer by Sports Car Magazine. The goal, according to Toyota, is to qualify and compete for the SCCA Runoffs at Elkhart Lake, Wis., in 2012. The club racer's livery pays homage to Toyota's 1998 Le Mans pole-winning GT1 race car as the company celebrates its return to the racing series next year.
To accomplish the feat, the magazine installed a group of interior racing bits, seats, a fire extinguisher, a harness and a WRC steering wheel. Hoosier racing tires are attached to 15x7 Enkei racing wheels. For power, the crew added an AEM performance electronic system, a cat-back exhaust and racing oils before a custom tune was done by Church Automotive Testing.
The first pickup Toyota is taking to the show is the Oakley Surf Tacoma. It has a beach theme, according to Toyota, and has the ability to go anywhere in search of waves.
The Tacoma gets the company's V6 engine with a TRD supercharger that produces 304 hp total. The truck was customized by Smithbuilt. Other performance mods include a stainless-steel exhaust from Flowmaster, a stage 3 lift kit, billet upper A arms, new leaf springs, a front coil-over system and Walker Evans 17x8 bead lock wheels.
Inside changes include custom embroidered seats, Topstich interior modifications on the door panels, head liner and carpet, and a Kicker sound system.
No surf truck would be complete without a purpose-built roof rack for heavy hauling. The truck-bed system comes with storage areas for wet suits, a cooler and a grill.
The Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series, which we've written about before, will be on display as a preproduction version at the 2011 SEMA show. According to the company, it will elevate the capability of Tacoma's TRD Off-Road pickup to a new level of fun.
The Baja Series features an off-road-tuned suspension, Bilstein shocks, TRD front coil springs, a cat-back exhaust and Toyota's 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive with electronically controlled transfer case and automatic limited-slip differential.
The last of the pickups is the Ultimate Motorcross Truck. Toyota teamed up with DC Shoes and West Coast Customs to make the ultimate Tundra for action sports. They started with a Double Cab version featuring the 5.7-liter V8. The truck gets a suspension lift from Camburg Racing, shocks from Fox, a Warn winch and a full array of speaker and radio upgrades. KMC produced the 18x9 wheels while General provided the 35-inch tires.
The last and possibly most interesting car from Toyota is the 2012 Camry Daytona 500 Pace Car, which will lead the field next year for the 54th running of the Daytona 500. It will be the first time a non-Detroit Three car has paced the race.
The Camry will roll on Goodyear Eagle F1 tires with 19-inch BBS wheels. Big brakes are provided by Stoptech, and TRD lends another stainless-steel exhaust. Tein donated the adjustable suspension.
Safety equipment includes a roll cage, four-point Simpson racing belts, a Whelen LED light bar and an on-board fire extinguisher.
