Toyota India Aims To Drive High Volumes By Etios
Toyota India, one of the fastest growing auto maker in the Indian market seems to
have decided to top every segment of cars in which it has its presence in India. Where its Toyota Innova has become the best selling vehicle in the MUV (multi utility vehicle) segment in the country, the luxury SUV Toyota Fortuner is going through a golden phase in India with massive bookings that have created a backlog of as much as 6,500 units. After overpowering the luxury SUV and entry-level MUV segment, the company is now concentrating on boosting the sales of its only premium sedan Toyota Corolla Altis in India. It has recently launched a diesel version of Corolla Altis in the country which will definitely give this model an upper hand over its competitors like Honda Civic (only available in Petrol version) and Chevrolet Cruze (only available in diesel version).
With this, the company has also started preparation of entering the volume-driven compact hatchback segment by launching its much awaited
Toyota Etios model in the Indian market by the early 2011. The company is expecting a high volume sales of Toyota Etios model in the India market and hopes that it will be contributing as much as 50 % of its total sales in the Indian market by year 2011. The Etios hatchback will be rolled-out in the price segment of Rs 4 to 5 lakh segment where it will lock horns with some of best selling cars in the Indian market such as Chevrolet Beat, Maruti Swift, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo and Fiat Punto. It is also expected that once the Etios get established in the compact hatchback segment, the company will launch a sedan version of Etios in the country to mark its debut in the highly competitive entry-level sedan segment where it will compete against some of the most popular cars of this segment including Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Fiat Linea and Ford Fiesta.
There were speculations that the company is also planning to enter the ultra low cost car segment by launching its small car in India by mid-2011. However, Toyota has denied any of such plans in India in the near future. Toyota has invested Rs 3,200 crore to establish a new small car manufacturing plant in India which will have an initial annual production capacity of 70,000 cars.
