Toyota dealer customers can be prepared when Plug-in Prius hits the showroom
With the arrival of the Toyota Plug-in Prius looming, Toyota is working to market an add-on feature for to make owning this electric more convenient - an in-home charging station. Your Toyota dealer knows that you won't want to be without one, as charging stations are not exactly on every corner, even in the cities where the Plug-ins are being tested.
The charging station may cost as much as $2,045 with installation and will include two ports. One is intended to be inside a garage and the other is mounted to an exterior wall for easy access. Knowing how Toyota watches the bottom line, though, look for a lower cost or some combination deal when on this at-home station when the Prius Plug-in does arrive.
Palatine used Prius buyers will enjoy this convenient accessory and it will really be a must-have for anyone not living in an urban area within easy reach of a charging station. The availability of charging stations, in fact, may be the deciding factor in the sales of EVs.
Since only a few major cities are now installing a limited number of charging stations, the idea that you can stop in at any gas station and "fill up" is not practical. Although, the oil companies may just see a way to profit from the cars that don't use their gas: install a charging station next to the pumps and make a dollar that way.
Toyota plans to make its chargers compatible with other vehicle makes. It would make sense that they would use the same plug standards and voltage, but who knows. Shockingly (yes it's a bad pun), Toyota hopes to sell 20,000 to 30,000 units in the first years of production.
This should really come as no surprise considering the success and following of the Prius. For those who take green seriously, if a hybrid is good, an EV will be that much better. Customers of a Toyota dealer who have bought or even considered buying a Prius hybrid will be potential buyers for the Prius Plug-in.
Why would they want to switch? Well, it's a bit of a novelty at this point. Instead of keeping up with the Joneses, they will be trying to keep up with you. The EV will likely be the new standard of environmental consciousness and those hybrid folk will eventually be thought of as reckless.
One thing is sure; Palatine used Prius customers who want a Prius Plug-in should get in line as soon as possible. Toyota will probably have trouble keeping up with the orders and you don't want to be the last on the block to plug in.
