Trade Or Sell Your Car Tips

When it is time to purchase a new auto, one of the elements that often need to be

taken is whether or not to trade in the car you are driving or try and sell it on your own. One thing will hold true regardless of what you choose, a clean well running auto will get you top dollar.

When considering whether to trade or sell your car, you need to take into account how much it will cost, if any, to get your car into the shape a buyer wants to see it in. Often times a simple car wash and vacuum is enough. In some instances the car may be in need of tires, brakes or bodywork. Unless the repairs will help get you more money it probably isn't worth doing. But, be aware for liability issues, you may not want to sell a car that isn't safe.

Trading a car in to the car dealer is a very simple way to go. A quick cleaning is often all you will need to do. A dealer will give you an appraised value that you can either take or leave. Often time people want to shop their trade or see what another car dealer will give them. You can also do a little research on your own and check out various trade appraisal sites like Kelly Blue Book or Black Book. Keep in mind even though you think your car is in excellent condition the dealer will probably consider it in fair or good.

Trading a car in at the car dealer may mean getting less for your car than you would if you sold it yourself, but it also means less work on your part as well. Remember when you sell your car yourself you will want to get the car in selling condition which may cost you. In addition you may have to meet some demands of a potential buyer, which could cost you again. Then there is the call after the purchase if there are any problems the new owner feels you should be responsible for.

Finally, you need to look at time. You can not tell how long it may take to sell your car on your own. If you are looking to use the money as down payment for another purchase this could be an issue. A car dealer will include the car in the transaction and in some states that means additional tax savings as the selling price is reduced by the trade value before taxes are figured.
