Imagine your mentor telling you don't need roads because you're going to time travel to your destination. And you're going to do it in a modified DeLorean with a boost from a critically timed bolt of lightning. Of course this is fantasy, told in one of the top ten science fiction films of all time. While harder to produce, flying over traffic in our cars is something that's not too hard to imagine for many of us, especially when we are stuck in traffic. Coming up on gridlock on a road, highway, or freeway, we can use our imagination to shift into flying mode and power off away from the snarl. The only trouble with that fantasy is that if we have access to flying cars, many others probably do too, and are driving them as well. The road-bound snarl could just as easily turn into flight-bound snarl, and our fantasy needs better solutions to escape traffic. A number of solutions are already here in our present, a part of reality.

These features offer travelers ways to get around that reduce the number of cars on the road. Fewer cars on the road means less congestion and better traffic flow. The availability of hybrid and all electric cars means fewer climate-changing emissions by drivers as they make trips to work, home, and recreation.

While fewer cars on the road helps with many of our traffic and air quality issues, there are still enough of us driving every day that we face the real possibility of being involved in an accident.
