Training Basset Hound with potties

A few weeks ago one of my friends got his Basset Hound

. It was quite playful and he let it to wander in the house to explore the environment. It wandered through almost all the places, through the bedroom, kitchen, lounge and the hall. Soon after wandering here and there it began sniffing the carpet and circled it round and round. It was too late for my friend to understand that it wanted to do its potty. Later he gave training with the help of some tips available on the internet and now the problem has been settled and he's anxious free nowadays about his dog.

Tips that he tried

1. Crate training

Dogs enjoy when they got their own settling places and crates are like den to them. It's the place where they sleep, eat and do most of their activities. So, as a natural instinct, they will never mess up or eliminate in their dens. Thus crate training can be the most effective and efficient ways to potty train your basset hound. In fact, it helps when you are not around home for many hours and is one the fastest method to train them for this.

2. Punishing/rewarding

Don't punish if you don't catch him in the act because he won't know about the reason being punished then. If you catch him, then yell at him and prevent him to eliminate there. Take him kindly outside and reward him after he completes. It will grow a good feeling and positive attitude that will encourage him to do at right places later.

3. Restricting areas

Accidents are obvious. So, it's better to restrict him from roaming around carpeted rooms. Let it wander around uncarpeted areas because it will be easy for cleaning if accidents happen. Be cautious and never let him too much freedom or he may mess up everywhere in the house.

4. Cleaning up the previous place

Quietly clean up the mess when accident happens and clean the area enough to completely remove the odor form that place. It is because when your basset hound needs to eliminate again, he sniffs and search for the same place where he had done earlier.

5. Make a routine

It's better to make a routine after you are aware about the patterns and signals of their potties time. Take them outside at least twice a day, in the early morning and in the evening and few hours after they have eaten. It will develop a habit and a routine that will be very helpful.
