Training to Become a Qualified Snowboard Instructor

Do you have ambitions to become a snowboard instructor? Maybe you want to take your career in a new direction. Just think about it for a minute; you get to wake up to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, you get to meet people from all walks of life, and you get to teach them the sport you and they love, surrounded by like minded people that all want to have a good time. Sounds appealing doesn't it?

If you want to take advantage of this amazing lifestyle then the first thing you have to do is get qualified. The reason you have to get qualified is so that you develop new skills and gain the necessary experience that will give you a head start when looking for instructor work. With so many snowboarding instructor schools, it couldn't be easier finding a qualified instructor course.

The problem with having so many snowboarding schools offering a variety of snowboarding instructor courses is that the quality of what you pay for differs tremendously. If you're interested in a snowboarding course, you need to make sure that you do your research, have a look at lots of different companies and make notes on what you like and dislike.

Now there are usually short courses or long courses depending on your needs and circumstances; the length of which can range from 5 to 13 weeks. Depending on the company you learn with, you'll be sent to various resorts around the world; Canada, France, New Zealand. From here you will learn the necessary skills to become a qualified snowboard instructor.

Make sure the company you are learning with offers a qualification at the end of the course. For short courses this is usually the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors (CASI) level 1 or the New Zealand SnowSports Instructor Alliance (NZSIA) Level 1. Both qualifications are great to obtain work. However you may feel that gaining stronger qualifications will give you a better chance of work anywhere in the world. For that you will need to take part in longer courses.

On these courses you will be learning a wider variety of instructor techniques so that you can teach different skills to many more snowboarders of various abilities. These courses focus on the level 1 and level 2 courses from CASI, but also the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) and Snowboard Instruction of New Zealand (SBINZ). Any of these qualifications will allow you to work anywhere throughout the world as a qualified snowboard instructor; Canada, France, New Zealand, Japan, USA, Australia. Wherever there's a mountain with a resort offering snowboarding instruction, you'll be able to work there!

The final piece of the puzzle is actually finding work so you can start living the dream. Having a qualification is one thing, but you need to back that up with experience. Make sure that when you apply for snowboard instructor jobs that you put down all the experience you have including family or friends holidays. If you feel that you don't have much experience then, just getting out onto the piste will help massively.

When you get qualified most snow schools will give you access to their database of snowboarding jobs all around the world. It is worth checking to make sure they offer this, but you should choose snow schools that will actually help you get employment, as this is the reason you're getting qualified in the first place.

So in summary, get qualified, get experience and get looking. You'll be up the mountain teaching and having the time of your life in no time.
