Transducer Mounting Options

So you have a boat, now you would like a fishfinder

. You must decide which type or style of transducer you wish to install. Typically transducers are mounted in three ways. Externally mounted on the transom, through the hull or inside the boats hull.

Transom mount is usually found on smaller boats that are trailered and frequently removed from the water. Mounted on the back part of the boats hull ( transom ). This position is not as likely to be damaged. When installing a transom mount transducer we suggest using a kick up bracket. This will move the transducer further out of the way to prevent damage from foreign objects floating in the water or when your boat is on a trailer.

Inside the hull has many benefits, most important there is no need to drill through the boats hull. Not having an exposed transducer allows for no drag or marine growth on the unit, not to mention nearly impossible to damage. An inside the hull transducer can be installed or serviced while the boat is in the water. Most units are secured inside a tank filled with liquid, the tank must first be epoxied in place. As long as the water flow below the transducer is clean you will get great performance and high speed results. Not all hull types are suitable for this style of transducer. Please refer to the units manufacturers guidelines for applicable inside hull transducers.

Through the hull transducers typically are mounted in two different ways. Flush mount units will sit nearly flush against the boats hull. These are best suited for boats with a minimum deadrise angle or on sailboats because they maintain the smooth external lines and produce minimal drag. External through hull transducers will usually require a fairing to allow the beam to be aimmed adequitly for proper operation. When mounted forward of the propellers and running gear you will create an effective signal with great results. External through hull transducers are usually best suited for larger boats that rarely see a trailer.

Select a transducer based upon your boats configuration and type of use. Most important always remember to refer to the manufacturers guidelines and installation instructions.
