Transition Words and Phrases

Transition words and phrases (also known as conjunctive adverbs, words of transition, sentence connectors or sentence adverbs), indicate help the reader understand by indicating the relationships between your ideas (the preceding) and the movement of your ideas from one to another (succeeding sentences), which allows consistency and smoothness to your writing.

They are classified below according to the function or idea they express. For each function is an example for you to be able to understand better and differentiate each. Use the following transition words and phrases when writing so that you will be able to express your ideas in ways that will let your readers understand them better.

To add information to an idea, use:

along with in addition to

also in the same way

as well as moreover

besides not only

equally important too (which is usually put at the end ot the sentence)

furthermore

e.g. We were glad to see their family at the gathering; also, we needed more families to help raise awareness for the cause we were sponsoring.

To emphasize or restate a point, use:

actually in fact surely

certainly indeed to repeat

doubtless needless truly

especially obviously undoubtedly

evidently of course

e.g. The children at the orphanage were indeed delighted with the gifts you brought along.

To comment or alternative idea, use:

anyhow however that may be

be that as it may in any case

besides

e.g. The play was not cancelled even if they were short of one actor, in any case, the cast believed that the show must go on.

To contrast two things, use:

also in similar fashion

alternatively in the same way

but instead

by the same token just as

however like

in like manner likewise

nevertheless not only

notwithstanding (usually placed similarly

at the end of the sentence) still

on the contrary though

on the other hand whereas

otherwise yet

e.g. Instead of hosting the game at the baseball field, the players continued the game at the covered gymnasium because of the heavy rains.

To indicate a result or cause or reason, use:

accordingly due to so then

as a result for this reason then

because hence therefore

consequently on account of thus

since wherefore

e.g. The choir practice was rescheduled since half of the members were unable to attend.

To indicate time, sequence, or chronology, use:

after eventually (time result) simultaneously

afterwards since recently

again finally thereafter

at first henceforth thereupon

at last hereafater up to the present time

at the same time in the meantime whereupon

during next later on

e.g. Church bells all over town were ringing simultaneously with that of the sirens of the town hall to signal every hour that strikes.

To indicate a parallel idea, use:

in like manner in short

in other words that is

e.g. The dancers were focused, ready, well-rehearsed, presentable, and had that sharp winning look in their eyes; in short, they were ready to "break a leg."

To indicate an example, use:

e.g. The requirements for the paper were described accordingly: for example, the paper should be a legal-sized bond paper, margined one inch at all corners, font size of 12, and should be double-spaced.

To indicate a conclusion or to summarize, use:

To indicate a condition, use:
