Ahmedabad, located on the banks of the River Sabarmati

, is one of the fastest growing cities in India. Ahmedabad is closely associated with the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. He established the famous Sabarmati Ashram on the banks of the river in 1915. Ahmedabad was earlier known as Karnavati. It was named after King Karandev. When the medieval ruler Sultan Ahmed Shah conquered the place, he named it as Ahmedabad.

Muslim monuments in the city are the tombs of Ahmed Shah and his queens, Ahmed Shah's Mosque, Jama Masjid, Mosque of Sidi Sayid, Teen Darwaza or Triple Gateway, Rani Rupmati Mosque and Jhulta Minara. Akshardham Temple, Hatheesing Jain Temples and ISKCON Temple are the temples in the city.

Other sightseeing destinations in Ahmedabad included Indian Institute of Management, Science City, Nagina Wadi Island in Kankaria Lake, Kamla Nehru Zoo, Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, Bhadra Fort, Calico Museum of Textiles, Shreyas Folk Art Museum, National Institution of Design, Kite Museum, Sanskar Kendra and Natural History Museum.

Pune is situated around 680 km from Ahmedabad. Located on the Deccan Plateau near western coast, Pune was earlier known as 'Punya-Nagiri' or 'Queen of Deccan'. The Britishers later called it Poona. Now it has got its original name Pune.


Pune has several places of interest for tourists. Eighth century Pataleshwar Cave Temple is a marvel of rock-cut architecture. Ganesha is the deity in the Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganpati Temple. Osho Park is a great centre for meditation and rejuvenation. Pune has also the prestigious Film Institute.

Another star attraction is Aga Khan Palace, where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for participating in 'Quit India Movement' in 1942. Among the other major destinations in the city include Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Shaniwar Wada, Sinhgad Fort, Saras Baug (a park), Sadhu Vaasvani Mission and Katraj Jain Temple.

Both Ahmedabad and Pune have airports. Major airlines like Jet Airways and Kingfisher have regular flights from Ahmedabad to Pune. There is no direct daily train from Ahmedabad to Pune. But there are a few trains which run on certain days of the week. So there is no problem of getting a train to travel from Ahmedabad to Pune. Some of these trains are going to Jodhpur and Ajmer side from Bangalore and Mysore. The train journey takes 11 hours to 13 hours to reach Pune from Ahmedabad.

Both the places are well connected by road also. Private operators are running buses on this route. The bus fare from Ahmedabad to Pune ranges from Rs.500 to Rs.1400 depending on the type of bus the travellers wish to travel. The taxi cabs charges a fare of around Rs.14000 for the trip. The road journey for the trip takes about ten hours.
