Trauma can lead to much destruction in a human life

Various stressful events or traumatic incidents in life can lead to more stress in life. Dealing with which can be very difficult though. Thus many of us surrender to various addictions. After a traumatic event, people often surrender to using alcohol to relieve their symptoms of anxiety, irritability, and depression. Alcohol may relieve these symptoms because drinking compensates for deficiencies in endorphin activity following a traumatic experience. Within moments of experiencing a traumatic incident, there is an increase in the level of endorphins in the brain. During the time of the stress, endorphin levels remain heightened and help numb the emotional and physical pain caused by the trauma.

However, after the trauma is over, endorphin levels gradually decrease and this may lead to a period of endorphin withdrawal that can last from hours to days. This period of endorphin withdrawal may produce emotional distress and contribute to other symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder .Since alcohol use increases endorphin activity, drinking following trauma may be used to compensate this endorphin withdrawal and thus avoid the associated emotional distress. This model has important implications for the treatment of PTSD and alcoholism or any other substance abuse is natural. PTSD dual treatment aims at recovering the individuals from the trauma as well as recovering them from addiction caused due to it.

Dual diagnosis treatment also runs on similar base. Basically, dual diagnosis means having mental disorder and addiction together. The mental disorder here leads to substance addiction. The individuals suffering from mental problems do not realize that getting addicted to the substance is not a cure to deal with emotional problems. They get addicted to temporary effects rather than fighting it out thoroughly. Once this diagnosis is done, recovery treatment is chalked out for the individual on personalized basis. This treatment includes behavioral therapies, spiritual upliftment through various activities, clinical help for regaining the deficiencies and physical problems caused due to the addiction.

Basically both the above mentioned problems are psychological; they indicate the dependency of human mind on external factors to live a happy life. It is not externally, but internally, one should be strong and happy as well content to live a happy life. Treatments can cure the mind and body, it is duty of the human being himself to retain the sobriety and live addiction free life.
