Treating Dermatitis And Avoiding Infections

Discoid Eczema is a skin condition where the erupted rashes are reddish circles in appearance in different sizes. It mostly occurs on adults and is found on the chest, legs, hand, and arms. The cause of this form of dermatitis are unknown but it seems to plague people during extreme temperatures as well as those with very dry skin. There are certain environmental factors that can cause the skin rash to become irritated. Some factors are not processing stress properly, scented soaps, allergies to foods, fabrics that irritate, skin injuries, and over bathing. For some people drinking alcohol may cause an eruption.

This type of rash can affect various parts of your body and usually include the leg and arm areas. The circles can be in many sizes and some people may have them for months. The small circles can look like coins, but the larger ones may have irregular shapes. At the same time, the skin may have some blisters and cracked areas. Like other forms of eczema, many people find the itching unbearable. People tend to neglect moisturizing the areas and rely only upon steroid creams. With eczema, I was told by a dermatologist during my own bout, that it is very important to still moisturize twice a day to deal with the cracked skin and reduce redness. This was instrumental in my own recovery. The rash can clear up without any sign of it left over, however, in some cases you can be left with a discoloration in the skin that can last for several months. Like acne, the discoloration will resolve and it is best to not expose it to the sun. In acne, the remaining flat spots are termed macules.

If you see your dermatologist or general practitioner about the rash, they may want to do some tests to rule out other issues as well as confirm the diagnosis. They may do a bacterial test swab to see if the rash has staph infection. They may even do scraping to rule out ringworm since this rash is often mistaken for ringworm. Patch tests are sometimes administered to determine if an allergy is responsible for this dermatitis. However, the majority of cases have shown no signs of allergic reactions. Scratch tests are also conducted to verify if certain substances are not tolerated well. Often itchy rashes are misdiagnosed as scabies. Biopsies may be performed to check for mites and their eggs.

Your skin may show just pimples and patches or have blister and scabs. If there is a bacterial component it can blister and there may be liquid inside. Kids also may have had a mild case of eczema but by scratching it introduced bacteria which resulted in impetigo or even a staph infection. Aside from the problem of an infection, when you scratch the skin it can also toughen and grow more thick. This is why controlling the itching with mild baths, antihistamines and relaxation techniques is important.
