Hearing the words, "your child has head lice" can be horrifying to most parents. Most people get embarrassed or ashamed thinking it's a sign of poor hygiene. Nothing can be further from the truth. Head lice is becoming an ever increasing problem with the lice now becoming more tolerant to the chemicals that are used to treat them. But do we really want to be dousing our kids with dangerous chemicals and pesticides?

There are natural, safe and more effective methods that can be used. One of those methods is right in your own kitchen cabinet, olive oil. It's a relatively easy process, albeit a bit messy.

Dress your kids in clothes you don't care if they get ruined. Olive can and will leave stains. Put a paper towel or old bathroom towel around the child's neck to catch the drips. Have them lean over the sink or bathtub and slowly saturate their hair with oil, working one small section at a time. Do this until the scalp is very oily.

Leave the oil in the hair for roughly 30 to 45 minutes. What the oil is doing is covering the lice and eggs so they can't breathe. Lice are unable to build an immunity to suffocation.

When the time is up, comb your child's hair with a regular plastic comb, not a nit comb. If their hair is long you might want to section it and put it in clips. Now, use a nit comb and comb through the hair in one inch sections. This can be a very slow and tedious process, especially if you want to do it right the first time. Be sure to rinse your nit comb in hot soapy water often.

When finished, the best way to get the oil out of your child's hair is to first wash their hair in dish washing liquid to cut the grease. Then, wash with regular shampoo followed by conditioner. You may need to repeat the shampoo more than once to get all of the oil out.

This process will need to be repeated nearly every other day until no more nits or lice are found. Once your child's hair is lice-free it's time to eliminate any possible infestation around your house.
