Treating, Transmission And Finding Bed Bugs

Small parasitic bugs belonging to the family Cimicidae are the infamous bed bugs

. These bugs need human blood to survive, and the name comes from the idea that they live in homes and beds or any other area where a human sleeps on a regular basis. These bugs are not nocturnal but are the most active at night, just before dawn so they can eat without being killed.

The insects look like small black dots against the wall on or near beds, mattresses and bed clothing and finding them is important. If they can already be seen in a few different areas, treating for them is something that should be done immediately due to the size of the infestation. If you were to sleep in a room or bed that has the bed bugs, they can latch onto skin and clothing to be carried into other areas of a house or even into new houses.

A skin condition that bed bugs cause is called Cimicosis, which results in bites that look much like mosquito or flea bites. They can be raised red welts or flat red areas, that sometimes have a severe itch due to allergic reactions. The bites can take up to 9 days to be noticed, and are normally found in a row of 3 like flea bites.

In fifty percent of cases, there are no bites seen and no symptoms. Serious attacks from the bugs can cause humans stress and insomnia. For those that gain an obsession about them being present, delusional parasitosis is a possibility. This means that doctors find no case of bed bugs, but the person believes they are present and causes symptoms.

Hydrocortisone, antihistamines and corticosteroids are the common treatments for the itching that are prescribed. Some physicians will suggest a person take a hot bath with a water temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit to manage symptoms. If the water is any cooler or warmer, it can create worse symptoms.

Transmission requires a bug to be in the area and picked up by a human host through either using bed clothes and sheets, or sleeping in an area that is infested. The insects can jump and move about on their own, but prefer humans as a means of transportation.

When inspecting your home, look in the mattress and box spring folds, curtain folds and any area of your wall paper that is peeled away from the wall. Signs of their presence will include brown or red fecal spots in these areas and black spots.
