Trends In Home Security

Technological advances and the need for better residential safety have led to a variety

of choices for homeowners who are in the market for a new security system. To make the right choice, one should first determine the reasons for needing enhanced safety at home. The three most common objectives usually are: to protect the house and its occupants when they are home, to protect an empty home while the owner is away, or to monitor children or other people in the house while the owner is away.

Wireless systems are most common, having replaced traditional wired systems that ran on electricity. In addition, many people choose to install a webcam or a high-speed camera with motion detecting software in high traffic areas of the residence. Systems with remote controls allow owners to control different features from various parts of the house. Perhaps the latest trend in residential security is the availability of Internet and mobile phone applications that transmit information to the owner and allow him or her to monitor and control the residence remotely.

Surveillance cameras are more affordable than in the past, and they can be hidden in lamps, clocks or other objects. Some of them contain microphones, allowing the owner to record relevant noises or conversations when away from home. These devices have become popular with families who want to monitor their children when home alone or with a caretaker; hence the popular term "nanny cam."

There are some caveats to consider, however. The most sophisticated technology in the world will not do any good if no one is actively monitoring the residence. This includes the homeowners, because if they turn on all of their cameras but do not check them, there is no way of preventing home invasions and thefts from occurring. Also, it is important to work with a trustworthy security company that will diligently monitor the system from its office.

Safety experts advise supplementing internal devices with surveillance cameras outside. Even more effective at frightening potential intruders are motion-sensitive outdoor lighting systems. Some homeowners utilize their landscaping to prevent break-ins, planting thorny bushes near entryways, for example.

Most importantly, make sure that all exterior doors, locks and windows are secure. Other deterrents to consider are security company signs or stickers warning "beware of animals." These extra precautions, in conjunction with a technologically advanced indoor system, should make anyone feel safer in his or her residence.
