Tropical Storm Karl Hits Mexico On Wednesday
Strong tropical storm at landfall Charles Yucatan peninsula in Mexico on Wednesday
, hitting sparsely populated stretch of Caribbean coastline, while the two Category 4 hurricanes roared still in the Atlantic Ocean.
Karl landfall about 50 km east-northeast of Kuitana Roo state capital Chetumal with winds of around 100 km/h, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.
The storm hit south of Tulum, a beach town of eco-resorts and Mayan ruins, cliff, but near the small fishing and tourist town of Xcalak. It is expected to rapidly weaken to a tropical depression as it moved across the flat peninsula before returning along the Gulf of Mexico, where it could become a hurricane by the end of the week and threaten the central coast of Mexico. Authorities warned the Yucatan peninsula of heavy rain, but said he still sees no need for evacuations. The storm threw doubt on the conclusion of the zone of the bicentenary of Mexico's independence from Spain, although there was no immediate decision to cancel the party.
Felipe Reyes, a hotel receptionist in The Frogs in Tulum, said guests were warned to prepare for heavy rains and winds during the night, but none had chosen to leave. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Hurricane Julia quickly intensified into a powerful Category 4 storm early Wednesday, and still far from land, the hurricane's top winds weakened slightly to Igor. Neither posed an immediate threat to land, but forecasters said it could hit Bermuda on Sunday Igor. Hundreds of mostly Mayan peasants were evacuated as Karl caused flooding and strong winds brought to the Yucatan, civil protection authorities said.
Cancun tourists, a U.S. beach destination and Europe was untouched by the storm, which also was likely to pass south of U.S. oil and natural gas platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico.Igor, described by the Miami-based National Hurricane Center as "great and powerful", was 1015 miles (1,635 kilometers) southeast of Bermuda with 135 mph (210 kph), making it a dangerous Category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Two hurricanes, Igor and Julia, also ran through the Atlantic Ocean but posed no immediate threat to land or energy interests along its projected track.
Hurricane season 2010 has been more active than average with 11 named storms so far, including four major hurricanes, but the damage has been relatively limited in several storms have vanished in the Atlantic Ocean. The early and rapid strengthening of many storms this year near the coast of Africa has pushed them in the northwest of issues away from vulnerable areas. But with two months left in hurricane season is too early to say there will be another dangerous storm, Hurricane expert Rick Knabb the Weather Channel, told reporters.
One people said he was in Monterrey, Mexico two weeks after Alex hit. It is tremendous damage, worst storm in more than 100 years. The Yucatan though should stand against a tropical storm (Karl) relatively easily. It is one of those years, people from Newfoundland to the Yucatan need to be vigilant. Be prepared for the worst.
