Troubled Teen Help Finding Security In Wilderness Programs
For a troubled teen, the pressures of society and life in general can lead to developmental issues
. These problems can be the result of ADD, ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder, depression, substance abuse and attachment disorder to name a few. Depending on the severity of the issue, developmental progress could become arrested. But therapy can help an individual reach developmental maturity providing the treatment matches the teen's requirements.
Wilderness therapy is one type of treatment that does not put a fixed time on a remedy as teenager's respond at different levels. A general trait of a troubled teen is shirking responsibility, regardless of whom it impacts. Treatment for this condition takes time, and there isn't a precise period to guarantee its success.
To be considered for wilderness treatment, a psycho-social assessment is performed by a qualified clinician so that an individualized program can be created. Advancement through the program is assessed by therapists and staff who detect a progression in the areas of courage, self-discipline, respect, honesty, work ethic, trust and compassion. But instead of conventional office or classroom environments, wilderness therapy uses Nature as the main teacher.
This type of therapy for a troubled teen is being widely accepted as an option to other forms of treatment such as specialized schools, the military, tough love, boot camps, Outward Bound and hospitals. It differs because the individual must work at self-help instead of being told what to do or think, using Nature as his or her teacher. The reward is becoming a conscientious member of society whom exhibits confidence because that person believes in himself or herself. At wilderness therapy schools, a student won't see another student or even staff member living at a higher standard as there is absolute equality. Although it is not a survival school, skills are picked up as a way of teaching self-sufficiency.
Naturally, progress in development must be measured and there are weekly sessions with qualified therapists and regular contact is maintained with family by phone. But the freedom of discussing issues is always open between a troubled teen and qualified staff members without waiting for a scheduled opportunity.
