Truck Driver Road Safety Tips

proTruck drivers need to have good safety habits while on the road

. Many drivers mistakenly believe that because they are driving a large truck or tractor that they will be safe in the event of an accident. This is a huge mistake. Trucks are involved in many accidents and truck drivers as well as the occupants of the other vehicle(s) are injured.

Drivers should be sure to get enough rest so that they will be alert while on the road. They should also make sure that they have enough to eat and drink and even keep extra snacks and drinks in their truck if necessary.

The first thing drivers should do before driving their truck is to do a pre-trip inspection. A pre-trip inspection involves a basic overview of the truck. This would include an overview of the engine. Coolant levels in the engine and fluid levels of windshield and transmission should be checked. You will also need to check brakes, lights including signal lights, windshield wipers, etc.

If you are hauling cargo be sure that is secured the best possible way. This may include being sure that is blocked, braced, tied, chained or a combination thereof. For cargo which requires the use of a tarp be sure it is properly secured. Trucks are prone to rollover in certain types of accidents so properly securing your cargo is very important.

For safety on the road, first and foremost, always fasten your seatbelt. Always leave enough space between your truck and the vehicle ahead since your truck cant stop fast and also because your truck will need a longer distance to be able to stop safely. Always use your turn signals. Other drivers dont know what your intentions are unless you inform them. Using your signals allows other drivers to plan their actions accordingly.

Watch out for road construction, congestion, and even accidents. Truck drivers often have limited visibility and are more prone to blind spots. However, this can be minimized if not prevented by the proper placement of mirrors.

Drivers need to know how to drive in bad weather conditions. Strong winds, heavy rain, sleet and snow often contribute to the cause of accidents. Drivers should also know when to stop driving due to perceived danger. It is always better to err on the side of caution rather than take unknown risks.

Drivers should always have a cellular phone or some other type of communication device that they can use for communication as well as to be updated on road conditions. This is also important to be able to report stranded motorists and accidents.

Drivers should know how to balance their loads and follow weight regulations. It is very important to be familiar with routes that their trucks can safely travel. Trucks are limited in where they can travel so drivers should be familiar with truck routes.

When you are in your truck driving safely, you are protecting not only your life, but the lives of others as well.
