Tummy Tucks: Bring Back That Before-baby Figure
Looking to get a makeover for mommy, maybe to get rid of the dreaded "pooch" that is nearly impossible to naturally sculpt
? You know it as a tummy tuck, and you might have also heard it called abdominoplasty. Figure out if it's time for your procedure!
What Happens?
In a typical tummy tuck, abdominal muscles are surgically tightened and excess skin and fat are removed. The results are that flat, toned midsection you've been looking for. This procedure can be tailored to meet individual goals, so you might also spring for some liposuction or body lifting at the same time.
Do I Fit the Description?
If you've seriously tried to firm and tighten that troublesome stomach with diet and exercise and nothing appears to be working, you're a good candidate for this surgery. As mentioned earlier, tummy tucks are a great way to restore a mother's pre-pregnancy body.
You'll also make the cut if you have lost a lot of weight and have saggy skin around your belly. Men shouldn't be discouraged from having this done, as the abdominal region proves hard to tone in both genders.
There Are Different Types?
Yes, there is more than one way to tone that abdomen. The traditional tummy tuck involves general or local anesthesia, an incision from hip to hip, and separation of the navel for later replacement. Abdominal muscles will then be manually drawn together and stitched in place, followed by excess skin removal.
The procedure is finished with the repositioning of the navel and sometimes insertion of a drain for excess fluid. Expect this to take between 2 and 5 hours, with about 2-4 weeks of downtime for recovery. As soon as it's comfortable, get back to your regular exercise routine to keep those abs in shape. The scarring will be barely noticeable on your new stomach in a year or less.
If you've only got a small area of skin you'd like removed, consider the mini version, also known as "scarless." This surgery is often done with local anesthetic and mild sedation (general anesthesia may also be used).
As the ideal type of procedure to get rid of the "pooch," the area to be tightened is from the point of incision to the navel, also meaning the navel doesn't have to be cut away and repositioned. The recovery time is much faster (a few days), so you could ideally have the weekend to recover and return to work on Monday (this does not include exercising or strenuous movement).
As a variation on the mini, the endoscopic tuck involves small incisions in and around the navel and pubic bone for the best scar concealment. The surgeon then uses an endoscope (a lighted, tube-sized camera) along with other long and small instruments to perform the muscular tightening and suturing.
Liposuction is also available in this procedure, and can further improve the results. Recovery within 1-2 weeks is normal, and exercise or strenuous activity should be avoided until doctor-approved.
The last two types of tummy tuck, extended and circumferential (lower body lift), are both intended for patients who have lost significant amounts of weight and need more skin removal. Because the surgery produces more dramatic physical results, recovery time is expected to be longer than any of the other types.
