Turn Your Bathroom Into A Home Spa

After living in cramped apartment after cramped apartment while I was in school in Orange County

, I realized that the thing I missed most was not a huge bedroom or a spacious den. What I really wanted was a bathroom that provided my own little getaway--a mini-spa, so to speak.

Even if you don't live in the residential equivalent of a cardboard box, you might find yourself dissatisfied with the ordinariness of your bathroom.

If you spend a lot of time taking warm, soothing baths--or if you wish you could but don't enjoy them enough--it might be time to make an investment in a bathroom transformation.

But you might wonder how you can make such a thing happen. Every bathroom is a little different, so you will want to consult with a professional in order to see the best results, but I can certainly offer a few tips and ideas to get your imagination going.

First of all, most people think that in order to have a spa-like experience while taking a bath, you need a gigantic whirlpool tub. Many home bathrooms just do not have the space to accommodate these amenities.

But the truth is, there are a lot of options for jetted tubs, including models that are meant to fit right into a corner. That is not to mention smaller models at about five feet long--the same size as most standard tubs.

Many of these luxurious bathtubs begin under a thousand dollars, with the possibility of adding other fun features, like extra jets, both small and large. This is only a little more than you would pay for a regular soaking tub.

If you have the space, you may consider installing a separate shower stall. After all, one of the biggest things that interrupts "you" time in the bathroom comes when your spouse is pounding on the door, needing to get cleaned up for work or some other outing. This makes sharing a bathroom much easier.

Plus, you can use the shower as a source of relaxation. A great showerhead can power away stress with many different levels of pressure. Regardless if you have a separate shower stall, make sure that you get yourself a high-quality showerhead.

Make sure that you have plenty of mood lighting. Many bathrooms don't have windows in order to guard privacy, but installing a skylight is an easy way to solve this predicament. You may also want to add dimmers and a nightlight, particularly if you are averse to burning candles.
