Turning Point Of Antimony Industry In China
China has a history of nearly 100 years of antimony production
. During the 40-odd years since the founding of the People"s Republic of China, a complete antimony industrial system composed of ore mining, dressing, smelting and processing has been established, providing a high productive capacity for the country. Since the 1980s, in particular, the country"s comprehensive mining-dressing-smelting capacity and production have been increased greatly. The comprehensive mining-dressing-smelting capacity of China went up from about 60,000 tons in 1985 to 160,000 tons, a 1.67-fold increase within 10 years, and the antimony concentrate production, from 46,000 tons in 1985 to 131,100 tons in 1997, a nearly three-fold increase within 12 years. But in 1998, the country"s production of antimony concentrates declined a bit, to 97,400 tons. Its antimony metal production grew from 35,100 tons in 1985 to the historical high (129,500 tons) in 1995, an increase of 3.69 times and an average growth of 13.95% per year. Since 1996, its antimony metal production declined year by year, being 82,000 tons in 1998. At present, there are 16 provinces or autonomous regions in the country that are producing antimony concentrates and metal, which are as follows: Liaoning (only producing antimony metal), Jilin, Zhejiang (only producing antimony concentrates), Anhui (only producing antimony concentrates), Jiangxi, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Tibet (only producing antimony concentrates), Shaanxi and Gansu. Among them, Hunan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Guizhou and Yunnan each produce over 2,000 tons of antimony concentrates per year on the average, and their aggregate production of the concentrates accounts for 89.5% of the country"s total. Each of these five provinces or autonomous regions also produces over 3,000 tons of antimony metal per year on the average, with their aggregate metal production consituting 95.6% of the country"s total. Before the 1980s, the antimony products of China had been monotonous, mainly including such primary products as antimony concentrate, refined antimony, antimony trioxide and antimony trisulfide, and intensively processed products had been few.
